Collection: Steven Haulenbeek

Steven Haulenbeek is an American artist and designer who lives and works in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Hope College in Holland, Michigan and received a degree in drawing and sculpture. In 2004 he began a graduate program in Designed Objects at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, graduating first in his class in 2006.
Living and working in the Holland/Grand Rapids area – a hotbed of American design and furniture manufacturing – had a profound influence on Haulenbeek. He fell in love with designers such as Charles Eames, George Nelson, Eero Saarinen, and Harry Bertoia, whilst at the same time trying to discover his path as a sculptor.
In 2010 he began his independent practice, Steven Haulenbeek Design Inc., with an emphasis on unique material and process-based objects for the home. His innovative approach to design has seen him develop new methods for creating objects such as the ‘Ice-Cast Bronze’ method, in which he utilises the frigid Chicago weather conditions, and using resin-bonded sand. His work though aesthetically simple is beautifully made through a hands-on, experimental prototyping style.
Steven Haulenbeek has been the recipient of several honourable mentions and awards. In 2015 he was named by the New York Times as one of the most exciting emerging American designers and in 2016 he was named the American Design Honouree at Wanted Design Fair during New York Design Week.
