Collection: Marc Newson
Marc Newson is an Australian designer, who was born in 1963 in the Sydney suburb of Hornsby. He graduated in 1984 from the Sydney College of the Arts, attending courses in jewellery design and sculpture. At the end of the 1980s, he was invited to Japan by Teruo Kurosaki - the owner of Idée, a company specialising in modern and western furniture - to design a new line of products. His first projects included the "Orgone" chaise lounge, the "Black Hole" table and the "Felt" chair. Newson moved to Paris in 1992 and established important collaborations with major European brands including Flos ("Helice" lamp, 1993), Moroso (the "TV Chair" and the "Gluon" chair) and Cappellini, which commissioned him to design the "Sine" chair and put "Wood", created in 1989, into production. Cappellini's catalogue includes iconic products like the Embryo Chair and Felt Chair and the Orgone series. The collection also comprises the Riga desk, the Wooden Chair, the Hangman coat stand, the Newson Vase, and its more recent Glass Newson Vase.
Marc Newson's work is characterised by its visionary, experimental and technological approach. His works are dominated by a pop and futuristic soul found in certain products designed for Magis like the Bunky stackable bunk bed, the Dish Doctor drainer, the Nimrod upholstered armchair and the Rocky rocking horse. In 1994, in France, he and Oliver Ike founded Ikepod (which he left in 2012) to produce clocks and aluminium furniture in limited editions. Again, in France, in 1996, he was asked by Hervé Chandès, curator of exhibitions for the Fondation Cartier, to create "Bucky", a spherical installation paying homage to the visionary American master Buckminster Fuller.
Marc Newson has designed the interiors of numerous restaurants, including Coast in London, Mash & Air in Manchester, Osman in Cologne, and the Lever House restaurant in New York. In addition, he designed the Syn recording studio in Tokyo and the shop concept for W<., the informal clothing brand founded by Belgian designer Walter van Bierendoncke. Newson also designed the interiors of the Falcon 900B private jet (2001), the epoxy-bonded aluminium die-cast bicycle "MN01" (for the Danish company Biomega, 1998), the 021C concept car for Ford (1997), one of the first examples of a hybrid combustion city car. He has recently designed a backpack for Louis Vuitton's Monogram collection and the 'kegerator', a home distiller with which he debuted for Heineken and Krups. He is part of Jony Ive's creative team as a designer of special projects for Apple. Newson is a university lecturer, holding a Chair in Design at Sydney College of the Arts.
