Collection: Hugo de Ruiter

Hugo de Ruiter is a designer who has a unique perspective on upholstered furniture. He views it as a third skin, akin to a well-fitting piece of clothing that should provide comfort and cater to individual needs. With a focus on dynamic shapes and functionality, his designs offer flexibility and adjustability to accommodate various aspects of daily life. Whether it's a moment of solitude, an intimate gathering, or the need for active comfort during the day or a relaxed evening on the couch, Hugo's furniture effortlessly adapts to the user's requirements. Notable among his creations is a cleverly designed compact table that cleverly expands in size to welcome friends at night, exemplifying his approach to (E)motion in his work.

Driven by a constant pursuit of meaningful progress in his concepts, Hugo often discovers unconventional solutions that combine distinctive functional features with surprising designs. Notable examples include the DS 164 for de Sede and the Wing for Jori, where his inspiration from nature, art, architecture, and technology culminate in remarkable pieces. However, above all, it is life itself that serves as his greatest muse.

From a young age, Hugo's passion and ambition propelled him towards a career as either a chef or a designer. While his early attempts at cooking sauces were occasionally lumpy, reminiscent of his first somewhat shaky table, it was his unwavering dedication that pushed him forward. Today, Hugo delights his friends and family with delicious meals while also working as a designer for renowned international brands. Drawing inspiration from the endurance of a salmon swimming thousands of kilometers to spawn and the centuries it takes for a tree to reach maturity, he has taken it upon himself to create beautiful and durable tables and chairs while honoring the incredible ingredients bestowed upon us by Mother Earth. Hugo and his clients share a commitment to sustainable production methods, and every one of his designs is meticulously crafted by skilled artisans who value quality.

Although nothing lasts forever, Hugo's designs strive to be lifelong companions. With over 22 years of experience in his design studio and more than 20 years as a designer and design manager for Leolux, he is a trusted partner for companies seeking innovative design, strategic guidance, and technical product development. Collaborating closely with manufacturers, Hugo bridges the gap to uncover new, innovative, and sustainable solutions, cementing his role as a driving force in the industry.
