Gumdesign is an architecture, industrial design, graphics and art direction firm founded in 1999 in Viareggio by Laura Fiaschi (born 1977, Carrara, with a degree in Design, Graphics and Communication from the University of Reggio Emilia) and Gabriele Pardi (born 1966, Viareggio, with a degree in architecture from the University of Florence). The dynamic and versatile studio focuses on continuous experimentation, creating essential and functional projects with a powerful graphic and formal presence. Laura Fiaschi and Gabriele Pardi both teach, holding lessons, workshops and seminars at universities and schools that include the Free University of Bolzano, Cried in Milan, IED in Florence and Rome, the University of Pisa, Celsius in Lucca, the Genoa School of Architecture, and the Trento School of Engineering. Since 2017, they have directed and taught in the Master's Program in Design Innovation and High Crafts at IED, Florence.
Since 2008, Gumdesign has been creative director of Cambiovaso, a collection of vases produced for UpGroup, involving thirty international designers in the collective project. Fiaschi and Pardi are also artistic directors and members of the editorial board of BAU, an association dedicated to contemporary culture founded in Viareggio in 2004. They have followed the creative direction of the Styl'Editions brand since October 2018. In 2020, Gumdesign was asked by Andrea Lupi to reimagine the corporate identity of the AntonioLupi brand. This was the beginning of a collaboration that led to the creation of fair booths and products like the Borghi bathroom furniture with a freestanding washbasin, oval central bathtub and countertop washbasin (winning the Edida award in 2021) and the Tratteggio (rectangular wall-mounted), Superluna (round wall-mounted) and Specchidicarta (with integrated lighting) lines of mirrors. They also designed the Tramato rugs, a collection of monochromatic velvet rugs featuring geometric patterns and optical effects.
A strong graphic dimension characterises the Murano glass and metal pendant lamps produced in 2017 for Siru. Their Swing tasting glass for Colle Vilca was selected by Alessandro Mendini for the Design Museum at the Triennale di Milano and is in the permanent collection of MoMA San Francisco. They were invited by Dyade Ltd to represent Italian design at IDEA in London during the London Design Festival. Gumdesign collaborates with the Venice Biennale, De Castelli, Fiat, F.lli Guzzini, Invicta, Lagostina, Lavazza, Max&Co, Mercedes-Benz, Museo Pecci, Nastro Azzurro, Red Bull Italia, San Pellegrino, Swarovski Italia.
Laura Fiaschi and Gabriele Pardi are among the designers selected for the "Prime Cup" and "New Italian Design" exhibitions curated by Silvana Annicchiarico at the Milan Triennale and the "Theater of Italian Creativity" exhibit in New York, curated by Vanni Pasca. Between 2009 and 2021, Gumdesign was selected for various editions of the Adi Design Index / Compasso d'Oro award in the Research, Graphics and Design sections.
