Collection: Francesco Meda
Francesco Meda was born in Milan in 1984, where he obtained his degree in Industrial Design from the Istituto Europeo di Design in 2006. His father is the renowned engineer and designer Alberto Meda. . After his studies, he moved to London where he worked for Sebastian Bergne and then for Ross Lovegrove. From Bergne, he learnt the philosophy of self-production, designing prototypes, sourcing, producing in small quantities and managing communications and distribution. This experience allowed him to follow and understand the production and life cycle of an object. At Lovegrove, a visionary designer with a well-structured office and several collaborators, he worked with influential brands, designing concepts for solar-powered vehicles, wind turbines, and lamps with Oled technology. This laboratory of innovation and experimentation taught him the importance of teamwork.
After his experience abroad, he returned to Milan in 2008 and set up a business in his father's studio. He worked with him on numerous projects for clients like Caimi Brevetti, with whom they co-designed "Flap" in 2013, an acoustic panel that won the "Compasso d'Oro". The Meda studio is like a digital Renaissance-style workshop, combining Alberto's skills and Francesco's experimental approach with new technologies (3D printers and scanners, parametric software). In parallel to his activity with his father, Francesco works on art and design projects with brands and galleries like Nilufar Gallery, Schoeni Art Gallery in Hong Kong, Henraux, Kartell, Galleria Rossana Orlandi, Mint Gallery in London, Tod's, Ferragamo. For Molteni & C., he designed the Woody chair family. With Zucchetti, Meda created the Medameda series of mixers. He designed the Pigreco stool and the Split family of chairs for Kolos and produced the Onsen series of armchairs for Gandiablasco.
The Bridge lamps and the 3D jewellery series are in the collection at the Triennale Design Museum. His "Orme Cinesi" collection was exhibited in Hong Kong at the Schoeni Art Gallery during the 2012/2013 Hong Kong ART fair. In 2020, he was appointed co-creative director of the Acerbis brand with Spanish designer David Lopez Quincoces. He has received numerous prizes and awards, including the German Design Award (2015), Compasso D'Oro (2016), the Best of NeoCon Silver Award Chicago USA, the Design Europa Award, all for Flap by Caimi Brevetti. In 2018 he won the Red Dot Award, Best of the Best Product Design with Aledin by Kartell and in 2019, and the Wallpaper Design Awards with Woody chair by Molteni&C.
