Storagemilano is an architecture firm founded in 2002 by Marco Donati, Barbara Ghidoni and Michele Pasini - who studied together at the Milan Polytechnic. The office is known for its double-edged link with the world of fashion, designing fashion shows, showrooms, events, buildings, headquarters and private homes, furnishings and lighting, often re-designing pieces from the 1960s and 70s. "Experimenting with unusual or different materials, with light and space, attention to detail and elegance are what surrounds and inspires us today," they write in their portfolio published on their website.
They realised the Neil Barrett headquarters in Milan, a fifty thousand square metre space conceived as a container for a series of architectural volumes flooded with natural light. They are also the authors of the Dsquared2 headquarters in Via Ceresio in Milan, which includes a terrace restaurant (for which they collaborated with another Milan office, Dimore Studio) and a basement gym. They designed the Bally showroom in Porta Venezia, respecting the building's history marked by the presence of a theatre and later a cinema, which closed at the end of the 1980s. Their new Antonioli store in Ibiza mixes industrial inspiration with luxury materials like black marble and modern neon reinterpretations of crystal chandeliers.
The design world has also often turned to Storagemilano to design its spaces. The Golran flagship store in the heart of Brera was renovated with the brand's art director, the Francesca Avossa studio.
The office flanks space design with product design. The firm's best-known collaborations in this field are Ceramica Bardelli, Gebruder Thonet Vienna, kdln, London Art and Potocco. They designed the Volume line for Ceramica Bardelli - a collection of three-dimensional strips for interior wall coverings that use bulk and volume to create plays of light that give movement to walls. Lines is a family of floor and wall porcelain stoneware tiles characterised by large formats, available in two sizes and three colour families.
Among the most recent projects by Storagemilano for Gebruder Thonet Vienna is the NYNY family of storage furniture, which uses GTV's distinctive materials - wood and Vienna straw – to create contemporary elements. The collection draws inspiration from postmodern architecture and from playful 1980s graphics. Vintage inspiration also characterises some pieces designed for Potocco. The Stay armchair, with its square but sinuous volumes, is lightened by the metal rod frame - a clear homage to the 1950s.
In 2021 they won the ADA Archiproducts Design Awards for the Volume collection designed for Ceramica Bardelli. In 2022 Storagemilano was included in the prestigious AD100, an annual selection honouring leading international architects, designers and interior decorators.
