Michael Young was born in 1966 in Sunderland, a small industrial town in northeast England. He graduated with a degree in Industrial Design from Kingston University in 1992. In 1995, he founded MYS Michael Young Studio, a creative consultancy and design agency characterised by multidisciplinary activity ranging from industrial design to technology. The Studio quickly established itself on the British scene, also attracting international attention. After almost a decade in the UK and Iceland, the office opened branches in Hong Kong and Brussels. Michael Young develops branding, product, interior and furniture design, characterised by an experimental method and the desire to provide exclusive, quality services.
The Michael Young studio is an experimental creative firm specialising in designing and realising innovative and technological products. Their elegant and essential design finds its origins in the synthesis of western culture and eastern tradition balancing crafts and industrial production. This is how objects such as Wear-it, a portable Bluetooth acoustic loudspeaker with a leather case made for Brionvega, or the aluminium foil Real wall clock designed for La Manufacture, were born. Collaboration with La Manufacture led to the production of the Roxanne polyurethane foam armchair, the High Tri-folding table and the Wired line of steel chairs in sled and stool variants.
The office's numerous and prestigious collaborations include Cappellini, Danese Milano, Gutram, Lacoste, Oregon Scientific, Scavolini, Schneider Electic, Rosenthal, and Trussardi. In 2001, they designed and produced the Dog House kennel for Magis, a polyethene structure (created using the roto-moulding technique) that has become a design icon exhibited in international exhibitions and museums, including the Triennale Design Museum (in the show "La Fabbrica dei sogni"), the Louvre and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Design Museum Gent. Parallel to industrial products, Michael Young works on the creation of handmade or limited edition items such as custom-made rugs (Parallel Brain Rug, 2018), aluminium foam vases (My Dynasty, 2018), and 3D printed shoes (Young Shoe, 2015). For five years, he was Design Director for Moke International; in 2012, he redesigned the historic Moke car, a pick-up truck based on the form and features of the Mini.
He has received various awards and accolades, among them: in 2009, the Wallpaper* Design Award; in 2016, the Red Dot Design Award; in 2017, the iF Design Award; in 2019, the Good Design Award, the Red Dot Design Award, the Design Anthology and the German Design Award.
