Hans De Pelsmacker (Ghent 1960) is a sculptor and lecturer in Sculpture, Glass and Ceramics, master’s supervisor and department chair of Drawing at LUCA School of Art in Ghent. Until the mid-1990s, Hans De Pelsmacker realized monumental autonomous sculptures in steel. A gradual evolution to spatial work submerged, whereby the relationship with the environment becomes the functional starting point. Since 2000, furniture and light designs arose from the tradition of sculpture, which sparked great international interest. Over the years, Hans De Pelsmacker has become increasingly committed to assignments in the public space. These are projects that are located in the hybrid zone between sculpture and functional object, often within an architectural context.
These projects have successful concepts and elaborations, but always start from the question of how art integration can provide added value to the environment. This vision has also contributed to various (acclaimed) participation projects. Since recent years, the desire to reclaim objects and redefine artistic practice has been growing. New furniture designs, sculptures, objects in bronze, ceramics and glass, carpet designs and graphics emerged. This followed in intense collaboration with various glass studios in the Czech Republic, ceramics studios, textile companies and graphic studios where his designs were realized. Gradually, this patient and joyful discovery of a broad spectrum of art artifacts lead to new challenges and opportunities.
