Collection: Sergio Bicego
Sergio Bicego, born in 1953, is an established designer closely tied to the Padua-based brand, Saba Italia, specialising in upholstered furniture and seating. After dropping out of classical studies, and a long apprenticeship in the upholstered furniture sector, Sergio Bicego opened a design office in 1991 near Vicenza. Two years later, he crossed paths with Amelia Pegorin, who had run her husband's upholstery workshop since 1987. In just a few years, the businesswoman transformed a small provincial workshop into a dynamic, cutting-edge company, which took the name, Saba, launching the My Taos sofa, designed by Sergio Bicego, still one of the best-sellers in the brand's catalogue. This was 1999; since then, the designer has worked with the brand continuously, creating sofas and chairs with a mood that is both informal and elegant. Many of his creations have become design icons; the New York collection, also available for outdoor furniture, includes chairs, armchairs, stools, sofas and beds. In 2020, he created a version of the New York chair collaborating with artist and designer Antonio Marras.
Another iconic BIcego design is the Pixel sofa, an infinitely configurable modular system, re-issued in 2020, ten years after its launch, in the new Pixel Light version, for both indoor and outdoor use. For Saba, he also designed the innovative collection of multifunctional fabric beds, Limes (2019), and the ironic Cookie pouf (2020), which recalls the shape of a cookie.
In addition to his long collaboration with Saba Italia, Sergio Bicego also works with the upholstered furniture company, Bonaldo, creating sophisticated collections. For example, the Lovy collection includes armchairs, a sofa and a bed; the Nikos collection (2015) was conceived for the contract sector; he also designed the Coral sofa. His creations are characterised by an unmistakable personal touch with an unusual use of fabric inserts, dynamic shapes and essential lines.
